Effective district leadership has always been necessary – for students, teachers, parents, communities, and society generally. The necessity is not new, only the urgency with which it is needed. Today’s public school environment exists in a rapidly changing economic, demographic and social landscape. It is subject to ongoing, unfounded and often manipulated public criticism, governmental mandates, diminished resources, contrived accountability metrics and policy congestion. To navigate this new reality, leadership – and the responsibility and accountability that goes with it – is critical if a system is to achieve the core purpose of schooling. You were not drafted into the leadership role. You sought the responsibility and were chosen to assume it. This conference is designed to help you affirm and enhance your understanding of the inherent responsibilities of today’s Superintendency and to provide strategies that will support your efforts to effectively meet those responsibilities. Simply, public schools cannot succeed without effective leadership. And if not by you, then who?
